Le Grand Kallé – Bana Na Nwa

“The world has taken many things from the Congo … the only thing given and received with honest pleasure has been music”

This compilation (by Sterns) brings together for the first time the breadth of Kallé’s recording career spanning over 3 decades including tracks taken from shellac and vinyl that have been unavailable for many years. Together with Kabasele’s most famous works this double album features a 104-page book insightfully researched with lyric excerpts translated from the original languages revealing the man, his music and its context as never before.

The Great Elephant of Congo was a rhumba icon. My favourite album was probably his last – Cocktail. There was a heavenly aura about that album and to this date I play it to much bliss. Africa lost a musician at heart!
