Jonas Gwangwa (1937 – 2021) was a genius trombone player from Soweto, South Africa. That’s him in the middle between 2 other South African geniuses, the late Hugh Masekela on the left, and Caiphus Semenya (born 1939), on the right, for their band Union of South Africa.
The album, released in May 1971, is an inspired mix of soul, highlife, and even New Orleans jazz, such as the old-fashioned “Goin’ Back to New Orleans.”
